Description

Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is one of the oldest oilseed plants of the Pedaliaceae family, widely cultivated worldwide. This allergen is important in the diagnosis of food allergy due to its prevalence and potential to cause severe allergic reactions.

Indications

Diagnosis of allergic reactions to sesame.
Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
Monitoring therapy effectiveness and reduction of sensitization.
Evaluation of immune system status.

Preparation

Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
Drinking plain still water is allowed.
Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Clinical Significance

Sesame allergy occurs in 0.1-0.8% of the population in various countries and is one of the most common childhood food allergies. It can cause severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory symptoms. There is a particularly high risk in patients allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Sesame allergy is also associated with the development of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis. Early detection of sensitization is important to prevent severe complications and ensure proper treatment.
