Description

rFel d4 – an allergen component of cat epithelium, a lipocalin-type protein approximately 20 kDa in size. This protein is one of the important allergen components of domestic cats and can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Fel d4 is primarily found in cat saliva and has high homology with other mammalian lipocalins, making it a significant marker of sensitization.

Indications

Diagnosis of allergic reactions to cats.
Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
Monitoring the effectiveness of allergy therapy.
Evaluation of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
Assessment of immune system status.

Preparation

Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
Drinking plain still water is allowed.
Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
Children under 1 year – do not eat for 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Clinical Significance

Fel d4 is an important cat allergen component that frequently causes sensitization in allergic individuals. Studies have shown that about 63% of patients with allergies have detectable IgE antibodies to Fel d4, indicating its significant role in the development of allergic reactions. Although IgE levels are usually low, Fel d4 may play an additional role alongside the major allergen Fel d1. Lipocalins, which include Fel d4, are a large group of proteins involved in transporting hydrophobic molecules and have immunomodulatory effects, highlighting their importance in the pathogenesis of animal allergies.
