Description

Red beet is a common vegetable crop with a rich chemical composition of nutrients. Historically, it was used as a medicinal plant, and today it is a popular food product. Beet contains the pigment betalain, which can cause red urine in some people (beeturia). It also has a high content of nitrates and oxalates. Beet proteins are known to have cross-allergic reactivity with other members of the Chenopodiaceae family.

Indications

Diagnosis of allergic reactions to beet.
Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
Monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing therapy.
Assessment of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
Evaluation of immune system status.

Preparation

Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
Drinking plain still water is allowed.
Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Clinical Significance

Determining sensitization to beet helps identify the risk of allergic reactions, avoid unpleasant symptoms, and monitor treatment. Beet can cause specific reactions due to proteins similar to latex allergens. The test allows assessment of possible cross-allergic reactivity and provides a comprehensive approach to allergy diagnosis.
