Description

Ryctolagus cuniculus – European rabbits belonging to the family Leporidae. These animals have a body length of 35-50 cm and weigh 1500-3000 g. Their fur is usually brown, with a white underside of the tail. They were previously bred for food and fur, and are now popular as pets and laboratory animals.

Indications

Diagnosis of allergic reactions to rabbit allergen.
Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
Monitoring the effectiveness of allergy treatment.
Evaluation of reduced sensitization after eliminating contact with the allergen.
Assessment of immune system status.

Preparation

Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
Drinking plain still water is allowed.
Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before sampling; for children aged 1 to 5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Clinical Significance

Rabbit allergen is a potent sensitizer that can cause asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and urticaria. The main allergenic components are Ory c1, Ory c2, Ory c3, Ory c4, found in rabbit saliva, fur, urine, and dander. Inhalation of these allergens leads to allergic reactions, especially in laboratory workers and rabbit owners. Measuring the levels of these allergens aids in diagnosis, prevention, and management of allergic diseases.
