FEIA (Fluorescence Enzyme Immunoassay) – a fluorescent enzyme immunoassay that allows quantitative determination of casein levels in blood serum.

Description

Casein is the main solid fraction of milk proteins, consisting of several families: alphaS1-, alphaS2-, beta-, kappa-, and gamma-caseins. They form micelles – organized nanoclusters with a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic outer layer. The proportion of each type of casein in the micelles is approximately 37%, 13%, 37%, and 13%, respectively.

Indications

Diagnosis of allergic reactions to cow's milk proteins.
Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
Monitoring therapy effectiveness.
Evaluation of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
Assessment of immune system status.

Preparation

Have blood drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
Drinking plain still water is allowed.
Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Clinical Significance

Casein is one of the main allergenic components of cow's milk. Patients often show polysensitization to several milk proteins, including BLG (Bos d5), ALA (Bos d4), BSA (Bos d6), lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins. Sensitization to casein has increased in recent years both in frequency and intensity of IgE response. Measuring casein levels aids in accurate allergy diagnosis, therapy monitoring, and evaluation of the body's immune response.
