Japanese mackerel, similar to the Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus, is mainly found in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, where it is known as chub mackerel or Spanish mackerel. The test determines sensitization to this fish allergen, which is important for diagnosing allergic reactions.

Fish allergens from the Gadiformes family (cod, hake) and Scombroid family (mackerel, tuna) share common allergenic components. The overlap in allergen specificity between these groups is moderate or low, which is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment of allergies.
