Carrot (Daucus carota) is one of the most important root vegetables of the Apiaceae family, widely cultivated worldwide and among the top 10 vegetables. It can cause allergic reactions, especially in people sensitive to birch and mugwort pollen due to cross-reactivity of the allergens Dau c1 (major carrot allergen) and Bet v1 (birch pollen allergen). Allergy symptoms can range from mild (swelling of lips, tongue, itching) to severe systemic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

FEIA (Fluorescence Enzyme Immunoassay), ImmunoCAP (Solid-phase Immunofluorescence) – quantitative determination of the allergen.

  • Diagnosis of allergic reactions to carrot.
  • Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
  • Monitoring therapy effectiveness.
  • Evaluation of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
  • Assessment of immune system status.

  • Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
  • Drinking plain still water is allowed.
  • Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
  • For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Carrot is a common trigger of food allergy and oral allergy syndrome (OAS), especially in patients sensitized to birch pollen. Dau c1 is the major carrot allergen with high cross-reactivity to other allergens, including celery and mugwort. Detecting sensitization aids in timely diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of allergic reactions, potentially preventing severe complications.
