C1 esterase inhibitor is an acute phase protein circulating in the blood that functions to inhibit the complement system to prevent spontaneous activation. It also suppresses the fibrinolytic and kinin pathways, as well as the cascade of reactions in the blood coagulation system. Impaired activity of the C1 inhibitor may indicate various immune system disorders.
The complement system is an important part of the innate immune system, consisting of proteins C1-C9 that help recognize foreign cells. Reduced activity of the C1 esterase inhibitor is observed in systemic lupus erythematosus, recurrent bacterial infections, angioedema, and sepsis. Quincke's edema is a sudden allergic reaction that can be life-threatening due to possible airway obstruction.
