Strawberries are about 12 species of low perennial trailing herbs. The strawberry is a sweet red fruit grown on a vine, mainly originating from northern temperate regions. It is used not only as raw food but also for making desserts, preserves, and drying. The leaves and roots have phytotherapeutic applications. The fruits contain salicylic acid and are used in herbal preparations as well as in cosmetic products.
The main strawberry allergen components have been identified: Fra a1 (Bet v1 homolog), Fra a3 (lipid transfer protein), Fra a4 (profilin). There is extensive cross-reactivity between different species of the genus and members of the Rosaceae family. Particularly important is cross-reactivity with birch allergens and grass pollen, which is often associated with allergy to Rosaceae fruits. Patients with allergies may react to peach, guava, banana, and mandarin. This helps to more accurately diagnose and manage allergic conditions.
