River/sea eel – a representative of the ray-finned fish order Anguilliformes. The most common species is the European eel, which can reach a length of up to 1.5 meters. Eel is a popular food in many regions, especially in East Asia. The test determines sensitization to eel allergen, which is important for diagnosing allergic reactions.

FEIA (Fluorescence Enzyme Immunoassay) and ImmunoCAP (Solid-phase Immunofluorescence) – quantitative determination of sensitization level.

  • Diagnosis of allergic reactions to eel.
  • Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing therapy.
  • Assessment of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
  • Evaluation of immune system status.

  • Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
  • Drinking plain still water is allowed.
  • Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
  • For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

There is cross-reactivity between eel and other fish from the Gadiformes group (cod, hake) and Scombroid group (mackerel, tuna), although allergic manifestations may be mild or minimal. Common allergenic components of eel and cod have been confirmed by studies. Despite the toxicity of eel blood to humans, the toxic protein is destroyed during cooking and normal digestion.
