Asp f6 is a phylogenetically conserved mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) derived from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. This fungus is a common cause of allergic fungal respiratory diseases, such as severe asthma with fungal sensitization and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Sensitization to Asp f6 is mainly found in patients with ABPA, making this marker important for diagnosing this condition. Cross-reactivity of Asp f6 is observed in atopic dermatitis due to sensitization to similar proteins.
Asp f6 is a 26.5 kDa protein that forms homotetramers and has proven allergenicity. It performs a detoxifying function inside cells, protecting the fungus from oxidative stress. Sensitization to Asp f6 is an important diagnostic marker for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Cross-reactivity with other MnSODs partially explains the immune response characteristics in atopic conditions.
FEIA (Fluorescence Enzyme Immunoassay), ImmunoCAP (Solid-phase Immunofluorescence) – quantitative determination of sensitization level.
