Parrot feathers can be a source of inhalant allergens that cause allergic reactions in sensitized individuals. Allergens get onto the feather through saliva, skin flakes, and bird droppings. Contact with a parrot or contaminated objects can trigger allergy even after a single exposure. Allergens can also be carried on clothing and household items, creating a risk of allergy even without direct contact with the birds.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of specific IgE antibodies to parrot feather allergen in blood serum.

  • Diagnosis of allergic diseases: food allergy, atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, respiratory allergy.
  • Assessment of the risk of developing allergic reactions to parrot feathers.

  • Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
  • Drinking plain still water is allowed.
  • Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
  • For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Determining the presence and degree of sensitization to parrot feathers helps in accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of allergic diseases related to bird contact, as well as in the prevention of unwanted allergic reactions.
