Histamine is a biologically active substance, an inflammation mediator found in various living organisms. It is released by specialized mast cells upon activation, often during an allergic reaction, and plays a key role in the development of allergy symptoms and inflammatory processes.

Histamine is a key mediator of allergic reactions, causing itching, redness, hives, vomiting, fainting, and even anaphylactic shock. Elevated histamine levels indicate mast cell activation, which is important for diagnosing allergic conditions and certain tumors. The test helps confirm anaphylactic shock and assess the degree of mast cell activation. Plasma histamine levels are transient and can rise within 5–10 minutes after symptom onset, making the timing of sample collection critically important.

  • Confirmation of anaphylactic reaction.
  • Assessment of mast cell activation.
  • Diagnosis of tumors: mastocytoma, polycythemia vera, chronic myeloid leukemia, carcinoids.

RIA (Radio-Immunoassay) – quantitative determination.
