Grapefruit, orange, and lemon are the main representatives of the citrus family. Grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree cultivated for its fruit. Its origin is unknown, but it is believed to be a hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange. Tangelo is a hybrid of grapefruit and orange with a less bitter taste.

FEIA (Fluorescence Enzyme Immunoassay), ImmunoCAP (Solid-phase Immunofluorescence) – quantitative determination of the allergen.

  • Diagnosis of allergic reactions to citrus fruits.
  • Assessment of sensitization level and risk of allergy development.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing therapy.
  • Assessment of sensitization level after allergen avoidance.
  • Evaluation of immune system status.

  • Blood should be drawn in the morning on an empty stomach or 4 hours after eating.
  • Drinking plain still water is allowed.
  • Do not smoke for 30 minutes before the test.
  • For children under 1 year – no food 30-40 minutes before the test; for children 1-5 years – 2-3 hours fasting.

Citrus fruits, especially grapefruit, are among the most common causes of atopic dermatitis. IgE antibodies to grapefruit are found in patients with atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and bronchial asthma. Grapefruit contains substances (naringin, bergamottin, dihydroxybergamottin) that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme in the intestine, enhancing the effects of certain medications by altering their bioavailability and pharmacokinetics. Concurrent consumption of grapefruit juice with medications may lead to adverse effects. Cross-reactivity with other citrus fruits (lemon, lime, orange, tangelo) is possible. Latex allergy may be associated with allergy to grapefruit and other products (avocado, banana, kiwi, papaya, chestnut, peach).
