Amoxicillin — a semi-synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic of the penicillin group. The test allows detection of sensitization to amoxicillin and assessment of the body's immune responses to this drug.
The immune mechanisms underlying drug allergy distinguish it from toxic-allergic and pseudoallergic reactions. According to the classification by P. Gell and R. Coombs, immune reactions are divided into 4 types: immediate (Type I), cytotoxic (Type II), immune complex (Type III), and delayed hypersensitivity (Type IV). Most cases of drug allergy (77%) are associated with Type I reactions, 5% with Type III, and 9% with Type IV. The course of drug allergy may involve several mechanisms simultaneously.
Determination of specific IgG antibodies is important for Type II and Type III reactions, which are accompanied by cytotoxicity and immune complex tissue damage respectively, clinically manifesting as various allergic and autoimmune conditions, including hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, serum sickness, vasculitis, and others.
